Course StructureAn overview of lesson times, starting from the first day
First Day (Monday)
The first day begins with the reception and registration of students at 8.15am. Try to make sure you are on time, and remember to bring the following with you:
- Form I-20 and F-1 Visa (only if you have chosen to attend a course that is more than 20 lessons per week)
- Form I-94 (a small green or white card delivered by air mail)
- Pen and notebook (other materials are provided and included in the package)
- Health Insurance (valid for the duration of your stay)
- Credit Card (for the security deposit in case you have opted to stay in a residence or apartment)
At 09:00 there will be a short language test – nothing to worry about! This is to determine your level of English, in order to place you in a class with those students of a similar level.
At 10:15 there is a scheduled break, where you can enjoy your Welcome Breakfast in the company of other new students.
Shortly after breakfast there will be an Orientation session, where information about the school, your course and your surrounding area in New York will be provided in a Welcome Pack. You will receive guidance on visa regulations, housing, transport and activities proposed by the school. Depending on the course you have selected, (General, Intensive or Semi-Intensive), you may then start lessons immediately afterwards or the following day.

On your first day, you will receive a Welcome Pack containing a manual with information about New York City, class schedules, academic information, proposals for leisure activities, an additional education plan, school regulations and important contact information for emergency situations. They will provide you with a number you can contact 24 hours a day throughout your entire stay.
From Tuesday Onwards…
By the second day you will begin to follow the regular academic schedule of lessons. During the first week, you will alternate between two different teachers and you will have the opportunity to compare different types of pronunciation. On the first Wednesday, you will receive the course textbook and following this, course material will be provided a little at a time. The time table will vary according to the course you have chosen:
- General English: The first day will be determined by whether your lessons take place in the morning (as in the example) or in the afternoon.
- Semi-Intensive English Course: As per General English, but with 2 extra lessons from 12:30 – 14:00
- Intensive English or English for Work (Business English): As per General English, but with extra lessons each day from 12:30 – 14:00.

Moving to NY
- Underground / Metro and Bus: A one-way trip on the subway (Metro) or bus costs $ 2.75. To save money you can buy a weekly or monthly pass, the so-called ‘Metro Card’, which allows you unlimited travel on the Metro. You can find a bus/ subway map at each station. You will also be provided with a copy of the maps on your first day during the Orientation session.
- Service Bus: You can reach Washington DC, Philadelphia and Boston by bus, which is the cheapest way to get around. Some major bus companies are Boltbus, MegaBus, Fung Wah, Lucky Star and Greyhound. Most of these buses leave both from Penn Station through to the Port Authority.
- Train: If you want to explore the surroundings of New York City, Long Island (via LIRR) or visit the New Jersey (via NJ Transit), the train is the most efficient.
- Taxi: Taxis in New York are literally everywhere, and is the preferred mode of transport for New Yorkers. Please note that it can be expensive, so always ask for an estimate of the price before you get on board.
When is the best time to book my flight?
Flight prices are at their lowest roughly 10 days before the departure date, and statistically, the best days to book are Wednesdays and Thursdays.
